In today's fast-paced and stressful world, it is no wonder many people experience a lack of motivation when it comes to their health goals. When our lives are out of balance, this can show up as feeling unmotivated, stuck, and even feelings of burnout.

The journey towards better health is not always a smooth one, and setbacks are bound to happen. However, developing a personal toolbox to address our lack of motivation can help us break free from these cycles when they arise.

That is why today, I am sharing practical strategies that have helped me to get over a rut when I’m feeling down.

Here are 6 action-able strategies that can help you navigate through challenging times and break free from your rut:

Embrace Physical Activity

It may sound cliché, but engaging in intense physical activity can be a powerful remedy when you're feeling down. It's not just about taking a leisurely stroll; rather, we're talking about high-energy exertion.

I experienced this firsthand when facing intense anxiety due to a team member resigning. My body was flooded with stress, but instead of suppressing it, I embraced it by going for a run, pushing myself to the limits with sprints. Surprisingly, this physical exertion released the pent-up energy and anxiety, leaving me with a sense of relief and mental clarity.

Allow Yourself One Day to Wallow

When going through tough times, it's essential to acknowledge your emotions and allow yourself time to process them. But here's the key - give yourself just one day to wallow. Set boundaries for this wallowing period, whether it's watching your favorite show on Netflix or indulging in comfort foods. However, it's crucial not to let this "wallow day" extend beyond the initial time frame. Afterward, make a conscious decision to move forward and take positive actions to improve your situation.

Get Outside and Connect with Nature

Nature has a remarkable healing power that we often overlook. Taking the time to step outside, soak up some sun, and breathe in fresh air can have a significant impact on your mental health. Sun exposure increases serotonin levels, which boosts mood and reduces stress. Moreover, reconnecting with nature can provide a much-needed break from the busyness of everyday life, allowing you to recharge and find inner peace.

Celebrate Small Wins

Our brains thrive on a sense of accomplishment, no matter how small the task may be. When you're feeling stuck, find something you can complete successfully and celebrate that achievement. It could be as simple as decluttering a drawer or organizing a closet.

The dopamine released when you accomplish these tasks can provide a positive shift in your mindset and give you the motivation to tackle bigger challenges.

Plan Something Special for Yourself

Taking care of your emotional well-being involves treating yourself kindly and making time for self-care. Plan a day for yourself, doing something that brings you joy and rejuvenation. Whether it's a solo spa day, a calming retreat in nature, or spending quality time with a close friend, the experience will provide emotional nourishment and help you feel more balanced and centered.

Embrace Journaling

Journaling is a powerful tool for gaining clarity and overcoming negative thought patterns. Writing down your thoughts and feelings helps you identify any false beliefs and provides perspective on your situation. It allows you to distinguish between real challenges and the exaggerated stories our minds create. Coupled with prayer or mindfulness, this practice can deepen your connection to your spiritual side, fostering inner peace and a sense of purpose.

Transforming your health and mindset is a journey, and it's okay to seek help from qualified professionals if needed. Embrace intense physical activity, allow yourself time to process emotions, and take advantage of the healing power of nature. Celebrate small victories, plan special treats for yourself, and incorporate journaling and prayer to foster a positive and resilient mindset.

By implementing these lessons into your life, you can overcome ruts, navigate through challenging times, and cultivate a thriving mindset that empowers you to achieve your goals and lead a fulfilling life.
